In Wijnen players take on the role of ambitious wine merchants trying to build the most valuable wine shop. Throughout the game, players collect bottles, arrange them in their shop, and try to outmaneuver their competitors by keeping desirable wines for themselves while passing less useful bottles to others.

The game is a fast-playing trick-taking card game. Each round, players play one card to a trick, and the highest card wins. Starting with the winner of the trick, the played cards are distributed among the players' shops. This creates a tactical choice: players must decide which bottle to take for themselves and which bottles will end up with their opponents.

Players score points by placing bottles of the same type next to each other in their shop. Bottles that fit well into a collection can create valuable combinations, while bottles that do not match the assortment may result in negative points. Players must therefore pay attention not only to their own shop, but also to what their opponents are collecting.

The player with the most points at the end of the game wins.
