A criminal mastermind is retiring. Over seven jobs, players compete to prove their crew can deliver results and earn the reputation needed to take over the syndicate.

The Job is a 2–5 player trick-taking game built around wagering, prediction, and follow-through. Each round, players commit Crew, secretly decide how many tricks they plan to win, and then play out a seven-trick hand. Hitting your Promise is rewarded. Missing it carries consequences that can affect future rounds.

At its core, the game uses familiar trick-taking rules, but nearly everything around that core is shaped by theme. Suits are not abstract colors. Each represents a different part of a criminal operation and behaves differently at the table. Authority functions as the dominant suit, but its power reflects control rather than brute strength, and it can be weakened, replaced, or removed entirely depending on the conditions of the job.

Every round begins with a revealed Job card that defines how that round plays. Some Jobs change how tricks resolve, others restrict leadership or promises, and some alter the usual power structure. Players also draft Specialists at the start of the game, which provide persistent abilities used on a fixed schedule across the seven rounds. These choices influence how players approach risk, timing, and long-term planning.

After the first round, hands are dealt from the shared discard pile, so the card pool evolves as the game progresses. Paying attention to what has already been played becomes increasingly important.

While the theme and mechanics are tightly integrated, the system itself is highly modular. Depending on how the game is set up, The Job can play as a relatively straightforward trick-taking game with wagering and bidding, or scale into a more deliberate, strategic experience with layered interactions, asymmetric powers, and shifting rules. Players can adjust complexity by choosing which suits, Jobs, and systems to include.

Players who fall behind gain access to Contingencies, single-use tools that can bend the rules at key moments without permanently resetting the game.

After seven jobs, the player with the most Reputation wins and takes control of the syndicate.

The Job is a trick-taking game at its foundation, but one designed to feel closer to a board game in structure and decision-making. The theme is not layered on top of the mechanics; it drives how the game changes from round to round.
