Old Rome, Inc. by designer Philip Jelley is a solitaire game of the Roman Empire from the Siege of Veii 396 until Octavian assumed the title of Augustus in 27 BCE. It shows the rise of Rome from an Italian city state to an empire that dominated the Mediterranean world. The map shows Provinces commanded and administrated by a Governors or Consuls.
The player controls Old Rome, appointing statesmen as Dictator, Consul, Governor or Tribune, raising taxes, deploying legions and fleets, founding colonies, making allies, and fighting wars to increase the prestige of the Senate and People of Rome.
Historical statesmen are rated for their skills in military, administrative, religion, and intrigue (or lack thereof), and each has a special ability. For example; the Dictator Sulla is a Patrician with 4 military, 4 administration, 1 popularity, 5 intrigue and a special ability against Pontic Wars. This makes him a good general (especially against the Mithridates) and administrator for increasing prestige and collecting taxes, but very unpopular and ready to turn to intrigue and violence.
The four scenarios starting in 396 BCE, 267 BCE, 149 BCE and 80 BCE, which may be combined into campaign games. Each turn represented 5-15 years, with 10 turns in each scenario, which take 2-4 hours to play.
