Fought on July 2nd, 1645, Lord Montrose deployed the bulk of his force on the reverse slope concealing them from Royalists. Due to this, General Baillie believed he was opposed only by a Covenanter rear guard. Montrose waited for the Royalists to cross the river and then launched his attack, that quickly routed the Royalist cavalry that crossed first and sought to cover the infantry. When the Royalist infantry proved unable to reform and step the Covenanter assault, the King’s army broke and fled the field. The Royalists lost 1,500 to 2,000 men, while the Scots lost a tenth of that number.

Fought on May 9th, 1645, the battle of Auldearnt was another fierce, if small, battle. Once again, Montrose was able to conceal a portion of this cavalry from the Royalists in a hollow, and their sudden appearance and attack on the Royalist left decided the battle. As with the other battles the vast majority of the Royalist losses were suffered after their army broke, and Montrose’s cavalry ruthlessly cut them down as the rank and file attempted to flee.
