In LULO Coast, players simultaneously build their own archipelagos by placing land and water tiles as quickly as possible. Adjacent tiles must connect matching terrain, gradually forming islands, coastlines, lakes, and harbor landings. Once placed, tiles normally remain fixed, although special orca tiles allow players to swap previously placed tiles to reshape their maps.

Players continuously draw new tiles without waiting for one another, creating a fast-paced game with virtually no downtime. Some tiles containing green trees must be placed on an opponent's map, introducing opportunities to interfere with other players while continuing to improve your own island network.

When all tiles have been placed, players score complete islands containing at least one stone landing, as well as certain island and lake formations. Incorrectly placed tiles are removed before scoring. The player with the most points wins.
