Lerpa is a traditional Portuguese gambling card game, popular in some Portuguese communities, especially among friends and in informal settings. It’s typically played for small stakes and is a fast-paced trick-taking game.
Objective
Win tricks and avoid being the lowest (or win the pot). Avoid being the only player to lose all tricks ("Lerpa’d"), which results in a penalty.
Game Setup
Each round, the dealer contributes 3 of the agreed stake to the pot.
The dealer gives 3 cards to each player. After dealing the other players, the dealer can choose to deal themselves into the hand.
If the dealer deals themselves in, their final card is flipped face up to determine the trump suit.
If the dealer does not deal themselves in, they flip over the top card of the remaining deck to determine the trump suit.
Playing the Hand
Players look at their cards and decide whether to play or fold.
If you fold, you sit out the hand and do not risk any more chips.
If you play, you are obligated to win at least one trick.
Once all players decide, the hand is played out in 3 tricks, with standard trick-taking rules:
Players must follow suit if possible.
If you can’t follow suit, you must play a trump; if you cannot play the highest trump, you can play anything
The highest card in the lead suit wins, unless trump is played — in which case, the highest trump wins.
Scoring and Payout
Each trick won earns 1/3 of the pot.
If a player plays alone (others fold), that player wins the pot by default.
If a player plays but wins no tricks, they are said to be or to have “Lerpa’d”:
That player must pay a penalty equal to the pot for the next hand. If multiple players lerpa'd then they must each pay a penalty equal to the original pot amount at the start of the hand.
Lerpa is traditionally played using a 40-card deck. Some regions, like Germany and surrounding areas, use an Ace-10 deck, created by removing the 7s, 8s, and 9s from a standard 52-card deck. In this game, the cards are ranked from highest to lowest: Ace, 10, King, Queen, Jack, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2. Others, like Italy or Spain, will use an Ace-7 deck, created by removing the 8s, 9s, and 10s from a standard 52-card deck, with the 7 now being the second-highest card behind the Ace.
