Labores de Bizâncio: Dionísio e as Bacantes is an expansion for Labores de Bizâncio that introduces a new suit, a new location, and a new way to compete for tricks.
In the heart of the Byzantine countryside, the festivals of Dionysus temporarily disrupt the usual order of work. The Bacchantes gather in secret celebrations, and those who take part may claim the favor of the god of wine.
The expansion adds 8 Bacchante cards, forming a new suit with values from 5 to 8. Unlike the original suits, Bacchante cards are not tied to a specific location. When a player wins a trick with a Bacchante card, they may choose where to send their worker, depending on whether Dionysus is at Rest or Awake.
The centerpiece of the expansion is Dionysus. Before each round, players may offer their Garland to awaken him. While Dionysus is Awake, only cards valued 5, 6, 7, or 8 can win the trick, regardless of their suit. Demeter still determines whether the highest or lowest valid card wins. Bacchante cards have priority in ties, adding a new layer of hand management and timing to the game.
If no valid card is played during an awakened round, the trick is cancelled and no player wins it. Dionysus then returns to Rest, ready to be awakened again in a future round.
When Dionysus is Awake, the winner may send their worker to the Sanctuary of Dionysus, where they can collect grapes, wine, or a wine amphora. These new goods can be managed just like the other resources in the game: they can be sold, sacrificed during offerings, or kept for end-game scoring.
The expansion also changes the role of the Garland. Instead of being usable only once, a Garland can now be offered either to invert Demeter or to awaken Dionysus. After being offered, it must be restored at the Market before it can be used again.
Labores de Bizâncio: Dionísio e as Bacantes preserves the core hand-management, trick-taking, worker allocation, and resource-management mechanisms of the original game while adding a new tactical layer centered around timing, card values, and the decision of when to invoke Dionysus.
