Introduction:Gardar (from Old Norse: Garðar, meaning "fences, enclosed spaces, castles") is a drawless game for two players: Black and White. It is played at the intersections (points) of an initially empty hexagonal board. The recommended board size is 9 points per side, but it can be played on a 11–sized board for longer games or a 7–sized board for shorter games. Each player has access to a sufficient supply of stones of their own color.
Definitions:– A group is a set of stones of the same color connected to each other. A single stone is also a group.
– An enclosure is a set of empty points or enemy stones bounded by stones of any color without including the empty points on the edge for bounding. You control an enclosure if the majority of the stones that bound it are your color.
– A shared enclosure is an enclosure bounded by an equal number of friendly and enemy stones.
– A loop is a set of stones of the same color around an enclosure, such that no additional stone can be removed without breaking the closed circuit of the loop.
– The perimeter loop of a group is a loop located on the boundary of a group. The perimeter loop may contain one or more enclosures.
– A surplus stone is a stone that, when removed, does not break the perimeter loop of any group.
– The value of a group is the number of stones that form its perimeter loop, excluding surplus stones.
– A dead stone is a stone adjacent to an enemy enclosure, unless it is adjacent to a friendly or shared enclosure. A set of stones that are bounded by more enemy stones than friendly ones are also dead, empty points on the edge are not included for the bounding.
Turns:Black plays first, then turns alternate. On your turn, take one of the following actions:
– Place a stone of your color on an empty point, then remove all dead enemy stones.
– Pass your turn.
At the end of your turn, the board position must be different from the board positions at the end of all your previous turns.
End of the game:The game ends when both players pass their turn consecutively. At the end of the game, points are scored based on the number of friendly stones in the perimeter loops adjacent to at least one enclosure within the corresponding group, minus the number of surplus stones on the board. Additionally, half an extra point is awarded to the player who passed their turn first.
To make the game fair, before the game begins, the first player chooses an integer as the komi value, and then the second player chooses a side. This balancing method is called pie komi.
