Derelict is a tactical sci-fi board game for 1 to 4 players where humanity's expansion across the solar system faces a grave threat. Players command elite Marine Squads sent to investigate and contain a growing alien menace known as the Venomshades. The game is steeped in an atmosphere of desperate survival within hostile environments like reactor facilities, flooded mines, corporate strongholds, and derelict ships, where players gradually uncover a chilling truth behind the growing turmoil.

Gameplay in Derelict is designed to maintain constant tension, emphasizing that "Nothing is safe. Every action should have a potential consequence". Players dynamically explore shifting locations by revealing the game board room by room, scavenge vital equipment, and confront reactive, intelligent Venomshade enemies who actively try to hinder their progress. Success hinges on strategically managing Squads' Energy and Equipment, coordinating actions, and adapting to dangers that can arise not just from enemies, but also the environment, equipment, or even allies. The game rewards boldness but warns against recklessness, encouraging a variety of tactical approaches rather than a single optimal strategy.

A key gameplay element in 3 or 4-player games is the potential for a hidden Infiltrator role, where one player secretly works against the Marine objectives. For Marine players, the primary goal is to complete each mission's unique objectives, which might involve restoring power, rescuing civilians, or securing critical positions. For the Infiltrator, their ultimate goal is to undermine human defenses and gather intelligence, with specific secret objectives determining their victory. Every Marine victory is a hard-won, temporary reprieve, underscoring that "The real war hasn't even begun".
