Introduction:Dendria (from Greek: Dendron, meaning "tree", combined with the suffix –ria used in many geographical names) is a board game for two players: Light and Dark. It is played on the soils (hexes) of an initially empty hexagonal field (board). The recommended size is 8 soils per side, but it can be played on a 9–sized board for longer games or a 7–sized board for shorter games. Each player has access to a sufficient supply of stones in their own color, divided into three categories: Seeds, trees, and dendrids.
To facilitate the physical game, light brown and dark brown stones can be used. Light and dark brown stones would represent seeds and trees, with seeds on the front and trees on the reverse. In addition, light brown and dark brown pawns can be used to represent dendrids.
Definitions:– A seed is planted by placing it on an empty soil.
– The root of a seed is a set of one or more connected empty soils in a straight line without interruption from that seed to the edge of the board, and a seed, dendrid, or tree of any color is said to provide nutrients to that seed through N uninterrupted empty soils (where N can be zero), as long as it is placed on one of its roots.
– A nourished seed is a seed that has all its roots with nutrients, and it is said to be nourished by a seed, dendrid, or tree of any color located on one of its roots.
– A dendrid sprouts from a nourished seed by more seeds, dendrids, or trees of the same color rather than the opposite color.
– A dendrid fertilizes all connected empty soils in a straight line without interruption.
– A seedbed is a set of one or more seeds of the same color connected together.
– A forest is a set of one or more trees of the same color connected together.
– A fertile soil is an empty soil adjacent to a seedbed or a forest.
– A forest grows from a seedbed whose fertile soils have been fertilized by dendrids of the same color.
– An enemy forest can optionally become a friendly forest if all its fertile soils are fertilized by friendly dendrids and at least one of those fertile soils is not fertilized by enemy dendrids.
Turns:Dark plays first and then alternate. On your turn, perform one of the following actions:
– Plant a seed on an empty soil with at least one nutrientless root. Then, optionally, let one or more dendrids of the corresponding color sprout from it, according to the aforementioned rules. If a seed is planted on an empty soil and all its fertile soils are fertilized by dendrids of the same color, it can immediately grow into a tree of that color.
– Move a dendrid through connected empty soils in a straight line to another empty soil, being able to jump over friendly or enemy seeds, as well as friendly dendrids, but never over trees. Then, optionally, let one or more forests, whether friendly or enemy, grow according to the aforementioned rules. A dendrid can stop at an empty soil to nourish the seeds or make them grow into trees and then move to continue doing so with others during its journey repeatedly, as long as it moves in a straight line.
– Pass your turn.
It is important to note that it is not allowed to make a move that results in an exact repetition of a previous game state. This means that the same moves cannot be repeated in a loop indefinitely.
End of the Game:The game ends when both players pass their turn consecutively. At the end of the game, each player's points are calculated. These are obtained by adding up the total number of trees in forests of different sizes, without counting repetitions. Additionally, half a point is awarded to the player with the largest forest, plus each player is awarded one point for each forest size in which they have more forests than their opponent.
The player with the highest score in the final position wins.
To ensure fairness, before the game starts, the first player places an initial dark seed anywhere on the empty board, and the second player chooses a side. This balancing method is called the pie rule.
Finally, to prevent possible stalemate tactics where players simply move their dendrids without making significant strategic decisions, at the beginning of the game, players agree to set a limit on the number of dendrid moves in consecutive alternating turns (both with the same number of turns) before considering the game over, which ensures that the game does not extend too long.
Note:In Spanish, I use the word "déndride" for the English version I made: dendrid.
