Introduction:Agros (from Old Greek: ἀγρός, meaning “field”) is a territorial game for two players: Black and White. It is played on the squares (cells) of an initially empty square board. The recommended size is 10 cells per side. Each player has access to a sufficient supply of stackable pieces of their own color, double-sided (front = farmer, back = seed).
Definitions:
A farmer is a stack of one or more pieces, where the top piece is a farmer and the lower ones are seeds.
The harvest of a farmer is the total number of pieces in the stack.
A field is a maximal set of orthogonally connected empty cells; an isolated empty cell is also a field.
A farmer controls a field if it is orthogonally adjacent to it and has a higher harvest than any other farmer adjacent to the same field. In case of a tie, the harvests of the next adjacent farmers are compared until it is resolved.
The value of a field is the number of cells it contains multiplied by the harvest of the farmer that controls it.
Turns:White plays first, and then players alternate. During the first three placement turns, each player places farmers of their color without seeds underneath, following the sequence below:
On White’s first turn and Black’s third turn, only one farmer is placed.
On the other placement turns, two farmers are placed.
At the end of this phase, each player will have a total of five farmers on the board, although it can also be played with three or seven farmers per player.
From the fourth turn onward, perform one of the following actions:
Choose a farmer of your color and move it in a straight line, orthogonally or diagonally, a distance equal to its harvest. It may jump over friendly farmers or seeds but must land on an empty cell. Immediately after moving, place a seed underneath the farmer, increasing its harvest by one.
Choose a farmer of your color and move it in a straight line, orthogonally or diagonally, to sow, leaving a lower seed on each consecutive empty cell it crosses, until only the farmer remains on the last cell traveled.
End of the game:The game ends when both players pass on consecutive turns. At the end of the game, each player sums the value of the fields controlled by their farmers. The player whose farmer has the greatest harvest receives half a point; in case of a tie, the next greatest harvest farmers are compared until it is resolved. The player with the highest total score wins.
Static variant:The same rules apply, except that during sowing, the farmer remains on the origin cell.
