The Zilch deck has 98 letter cards and 6 wild cards. In each round, the dealer quickly deals 8 cards face up to the table. The first player to call out a valid word of 4+ letters that can be spelled from the visible cards claims those letter cards. The dealer then replaces them for the next round. After the deck is used up, the player with the most card wins.

For specific cases:

If no one can find a word, a player may call "Zilch!", after which the others continue trying to find a word. If no one can, the player who called Zilch collects all 8 cards; if someone can, that player gets all 8 cards.

If someone calls an invalid word, any other player can call "Challenge!" and the word is looked up in an agreed-on dictionary. If the word is invalid, the challenger gets all 8 cards; if valid, the one who called the word gets all 8.

There are two more difficult levels:
Pro: deal out 10 cards per round, minimum word length is 5.
Genius: deal out 12 cards per round, minimum word length is 6.

Players of different skill can play together with handicaps: weaker players can call out words of 3+ letters; others need a minimum length of 4 or 5 or 6.
