Words Built Backwards is a game for 2 players, but more players may be added by using more than one set. Each player gets 95 6-mm letter cubes in a draw-string bag -- black cubes with white letters for one player, and white cubes with black letters for the other. The cubes are the type of square beads used in making bracelets with words along them, with the same letter on all sides of the cube. They also each get a blue staging area strip with spaces for 8 cube, and a red rack for spelling words, with 5 rows of 8 spaces for cubes.

There are no turns: Each player draws 8 cubes from their bag and places them on the staging area, and starts spelling words with them. Letters are placed on any row of the red rack, going from right to left, meaning that words are spelled backwards. Empty spaces on the staging area are filled from the bag. It is allowed to place letters on the red rack that do not spell valid words, allowing one to bring more letters out of the bag, but such "words" are not scored.

The game can end one of several ways:

First to Finish: When one player is content with what they have on their rack, they say "Time", and the other player stops, too.
Not Timed: Both players play at their own rate, and each ends when they want.
Timed: A timer is set to any time (a timer is provided but with no battery), and when the time expires, both players stop.

Each valid word on a player's rack earns one point per letter cube in it. The player with the highest total score wins.
