USAGI TO KAME (兎と亀, "The Hare and the Tortoise") retells the old fable as a two-player race to a patch of carrots. One player is Usagi the Hare and the other is Kame the Tortoise. Both meeples start at the bottom of a winding 36-space path, and the first to reach the Carrot Patch at the end wins. True to the fable, rushing ahead isn't always the best way to win.

The game uses 16 carrot cards, two each of the numbers 1 through 8. The cards are shuffled into a face-down deck, and five are dealt face up to form the Carrot Patch. On each turn, the player who is further behind on the path picks any card from the Patch, moves their meeple forward that many spaces, and refills the Patch from the deck. A player who stays behind may take several turns in a row, while a player who hops far ahead may have to watch the other catch up. Kame takes the first turn. Whenever the meeples are tied after that, the player who did not just move goes next.

One restriction shapes every choice, the No-Mirror Rule. A player may not take a card with the same number as the last card taken by either player, unless every card in the Patch has that number. Since each number appears only twice, players can track which cards are gone, guess what may come out of the deck, and use the No-Mirror Rule to deny an opponent the card they need. Small steps usually keep the turns coming, but a well-timed big hop often decides the race.

The first player to reach or pass space 36 wins; an exact count isn't needed. A game takes about 10 to 15 minutes, and players are encouraged to swap animals for the next race.
