UFO Derby is a fast-paced, simultaneous card-play racing and betting game. Instead of piloting the spacecraft, players take on the roles of shady galaxy gamblers lurking behind the scenes, using their influence to manipulate the outcome of the universe's premier alien drag race to line their own pockets.

The game is played over three distinct races. At the start of a race, players review their hand of cards and place one to three cards face-down as secret wagers on which colored UFOs will perform the best. During the movement phase, players simultaneously select and reveal cards from their hands to advance the ships down an 18-space track. However, a unique twist dictates movement: only the card with the lowest numerical value played for each colour is valid. The matching UFO then advances by that exact number of spaces, forcing players to anticipate their opponents' plays to either boost their favoured racer or stall a rival.

To win, players must amass the most currency (G) by the end of the third race. Everyone starts on equal footing with 5G, but payouts are awarded at the end of each round based on how well the final finishing positions match the hidden bets. Because the payout multipliers scale higher in later rounds, the final race offers massive opportunities for dramatic comebacks.
