Trenches: Night Raid is a WWI-themed roll and write game. You start each mission with a squad of nine, represented by dice in formation at the bottom right of the game sheet. The squad consists of a leader and two teams of four, A and B. Each turn, you choose a sector to engage. If unoccupied, you can move into it. If occupied by enemy, you must attack first. Next, you decide which of your two teams will attack and whether you will lead the attack.

Combat is determined by dice rolls, modified by your leader dice, the conditions of the battlefield, and combining dice rolls. Reference the map key (see below) for enemy stats and the impact of battlefield conditions.

If you move into a space with a target, (e.g., supplies or artillery) you may earn victory points by using equipment to destroy it. Every wounded soldier or KIA reduces your courage, but every time you destroy a target or lead an attack you may regain courage.

If you run out of courage, you lose. If your entire squad dies, you lose. If your squad leader dies, you lose. But those who can secure 12 points achieve VICTORY! Replay missions with different strategies and earn a three star victory (20 points).
