The Terror transports you to Paris, 1793 – the bloodiest days of the French Revolution. It’s a time of revolutionary intrigue, paranoia, betrayals, and sudden turns of fortune.

The game tells the story of the Terror. It can be set up in minutes, moves fast and hits hard round after round. No slack, no bloat. Just screaming good fun!

The Terror is a “take that” strategy board game with a rich historical theme, in which strong, simple gameplay builds into a fun and frantic battle of wits. To survive in Paris in 1793, you must adapt, deceive, and outmanoeuvre your rivals.

To survive the festival of killing players must collect allies from powerful factions, and avoid association with citizens whose factions have fallen out of favour.

Citizen cards represent leading figures from the five major factions, ranked from one to three stars. The value of these cards will be determined not just by the stars, but also on the ultimate fate of the faction to which they belong.  

As the game progresses, citizens are sent to the guillotine. The more members of a faction who are executed, the more disgraced that faction becomes; and the more dangerous it is to be associated with them.

For example, by the end of the game, 3-star Maximilien Robespierre might be worth either: 6 points, 3 points, or minus 3 (depending on the fate of his faction, the Montagnards).

At the end of the game, factions that have suffered the most executions will rank lowest. Their allies will not just be worth less, they will count against you.

To win, you must manipulate the course of the Terror—protecting factions you are associated with, while pushing rival factions toward the guillotine. You influence events by taking citizen allies, sending others to the guillotine, and by playing Terror Cards. These allow you to execute rival citizens, swap citizens with your opponents, or make secret moves (the mask card) that change the balance of power. 

Beware. Not everyone belongs to a revolutionary faction. The Bourbons, the royal family and their supporters, are already doomed. In Paris in 1793, the taint of association with them could cost you dearly.  There are five Bourbon cards in the deck, and you do not want them. 

Finally, each player receives a secret Conspiracy Card, which carries a hidden objective to pursue during the game. If you succeed in your conspiracy, you will gain additional points at the end of the game.
