The Possessed is a social deduction game. One player is the possessed host, while the other players are secretly divided into two teams: the “good” that wins by successfully exorcising the demon, and the “evil” that wins by sabotaging the ritual and plunge the world into darkness.

After choosing one player to be the possessed host, the remaining players are secretly divided into two teams: the Good Team (Exorcists, and possibly Infiltrators) and the Evil Team (Cultists). The game begins with the Investigation Phase. The Good Team must uncover which demon is behind the possession to perform the correct exorcism, while the Cultists mislead and sabotage.

Players may question The Possessed, research demons and ritual components, or declare who they believe the Active Demon to be. Along the way, Trust Tokens may be given to other players.

Once the demon is revealed, the game enters the Ritual Phase. The Good Team gathers the correct components while the Evil Team tries to derail the ritual. In the end, the player with the most Trust performs the Exorcism. If that is an Exorcist, the Good Team wins. If not, the demon is unleashed — and the Evil Team wins.
