A Forgotten Campaign of the First World War:
In August 1914, as the First World War erupted across Europe, another conflict began in the forests, villages and railway corridors of West Africa. The small German colony of Togoland found itself surrounded by Allied territory, with British forces advancing from the Gold Coast and French forces moving in from Dahomey. Their objective was to defeat the German colonial forces and capture the powerful wireless station at Kamina, a vital communications link for the German Empire.
The Great War in Togoland 1914: Scenario Book brings this little-known campaign to the tabletop, allowing players to recreate the principal engagements fought during the opening weeks of the war. From the early advances towards Lomé to the resistance at Bafilo and Agbeluvoe, the fierce fighting at Khra (Chra), and the final advance towards Kamina, each scenario presents a different challenge for the commanders involved.
The campaign was fought by relatively small forces, but the outcome depended on sound leadership, careful movement and the effective use of terrain. Dense bush, narrow roads, railway lines, streams and prepared defensive positions shaped the battlefield. Machine guns could dominate exposed approaches, while determined infantry and coordinated attacks could overcome seemingly formidable obstacles.
This scenario book is designed to be used alongside The Great War in Togoland 1914 rules.
Each scenario provides a historical background, orders of battle, battlefield layout, deployment instructions, special rules and victory conditions. Where appropriate, campaign consequences allow the results of one engagement to influence the next, creating a connected series of battles rather than a collection of isolated games.
Historical accuracy provides the foundation, but the tabletop allows events to unfold differently. German commanders may hold their positions longer than they did historically, Allied attacks may succeed where they once failed, and a single decision may alter the course of the campaign. Players are encouraged to consider both their immediate tactical objectives and the wider strategic situation.
The scenarios are intended to offer an engaging balance between historical detail and enjoyable tabletop play. Force sizes and certain battlefield mechanisms may be adjusted to suit the miniatures available, the size of the playing area and the preferences of the players. Any such adaptations should preserve the essential character of each engagement.
Above all, this book aims to bring attention to a campaign that is often overlooked in accounts of the First World War, and to the British, French, German and African soldiers whose experiences formed part of its history.
The date is August 1914. The campaign for Togoland has begun. Take command, plan your advance, defend your positions and decide whether history will be repeated—or rewritten on the tabletop.
