A card game.

“Dr. Eliot, president emeritus of Harvard University, has said that the depth and thoroughness of a person's education can be determined largely by his use of the English language. Another noted educator has said that nothing is more truly indicative of the culture of an individual than his pronunciation of words.

The purpose of this game is to encourage the use of the dictionary and to emphasize the absolute necessity of frequent reference to a lexicon of recognized authority to make sure of one's pronunciation.

The 105 words represented in the game are words in common use yet commonly mispronounced.
The number might be multiplied indefinitely. With but few exceptions words with two or more pronunciations or with disputed

pronunciations have not been used. Of the exceptions the pronunciation given is that recommended by a majority of the leading lexicographers.

In addition to its cultural benefits and practical value the game will be found an entertaining diversion. It is played like
the old game of Authors. The 105 cards are divided into 21 books of five cards each. The person calling for a card must

pronounce the word correctly in order to receive the card.
SHOULD HE FAIL TO GET THE ACCENT ON THE RIGHT SYLLABLE OR TO PRONOUNCE THE WORD IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE DIACRITICAL MARKS, HE DOES NOT RECEIVE THE CARD.

The Guide to Pronunciation comprising all the diacritically marked vowels will be found on the back of each card, thus enabling the player to make easy reference to it whenever in doubt as to the pronunciation of a vowel. The child will find it
an invaluable help to memorize thoroughly this Guide. The cards should be grouped in books according to their numerical
classification. The player receiving the largest number of books wins the game.”
