The Campaign of 1876 is a military simulation recreating the U.S. Army’s Cavalry operations against the Sioux and Northern Cheyenne Indians in 1876. It was during this campaign that two major disasters confronted the U.S. Army. The first was General George Crooks’ defeat by Crazy Horse at the Battle of the Rosebud and secondly, General George Custer and five companies of the 7th Cavalry Regiment were totally annihilated at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. The Campaign of 1876 is a two-player game with each player controlling units (counters or playing pieces) which represent the opposing forces which could and did fight in the campaign of 1876. The Indian player controls units representing the thousands of Sioux and Northern Cheyenne, which were encamped along the Little Big Horn River. The U.S. Army player controls the Cavalry, Infantry, Indian Scout and Civilian units which were assigned to the three different Army columns of forces which had been sent against the hostile Indians. Each Hex on the game board represents approximately 6 miles. Each turn represents 1 day. Although the game is primarily a two-player game, subordinate commanders may be represented by additional players.
The GAME PARTS consist of: a game mapboard, counters (referred to as units or counters, which must be mounted on cardboard and cut out in a manner similar to the mapboard), rules pages, and a set of charts. In addition, players will also need one die (which is not provided with the game). Some of the charts are: the Combat Resolution Chart, the Terrain Effects Chart, the Victory Point Chart, the Set-Up Chart, and the Turn Recording Chart. A hexagonal grid is superimposed on the mapboard to aid in the movement of the units or counters.
The UNITS OR COUNTERS represent the opposing forces in the campaign and are marked by different symbols and numbers. Each unit has a symbol box on it. On either side of the symbol box are historical designations which are vital for the Set-Up of the game but are not important after the initial Set-up. Below the symbol box are two large size numbers. The first number on each counter is that unit’s strength in comparison to each other unit’s strength, while the second number is the total number of movement points which may be spent in moving across hexsides and into hexes. The different symbols in the symbol box represent: Infantry = X; Cavalry = /; Civilians = C; and Supply Trains = [box]; (Artillery has been incorporated into the strengths of the appropriate Cavalry or Infantry units). A (I) above the symbol represents a company sized unit while a (II) represents a battalion sized unit. Each Army unit represents a Company or Battalion while the Indian counters represent a large group of Indians of the same tribe. The Game-Turn Marker is used to record each turn on the Turn Recording Chart.
