The American Revolution is inspired by Revolutionary War games from the past. The look and play style is from earlier games but use modern game components and updated game systems, making this the best combination of the past and present.

In the The American Revolution, players take the roles the American and British commanders maneuvering their forces to win the war. For the Americans, hit and run attacks and minor battles are advantageous because their forces are scattered but can move more than the British. For the British, their armies start strong but are slow and they must defeat the Americans before the Americans can build strong armies. Also, they must be able to bring Washington to battle and defeat him to end the rebellion.

The American Revolution game has both classic and advanced rules. The advanced game rules use the classic rules with some exceptions and differences that provide more game detail.
