Prepare the deck of 25 room tiles by setting aside the Hall, which is placed in the center of the table. Shuffle the remaining room tiles and stack them face down.

Choose the character you wish to play and take the corresponding Sanity, Health, and Item Card tokens, selecting the number of starting Item Cards as specified by your character.

Shuffle the 30 Event Cards and place the deck face down on the table.

Shuffle the Monster Cards. Draw one card at random without looking at it and place it on the table.

Shuffle the 12 Item Cards and place the deck face down on the table.

Place your character's standee in the Hall. Reveal the first room tile… place it on an available connection point, and draw an Event Card. The exploration now begins…

Game Objective and Victory Conditions

The goal of the game is to collect enough Clues to escape the house and, if possible, save the girl. The escape combinations and victory points are as follows:

1 Clue + Girl: 10 Victory Points

2 Clues + Girl: 20 Victory Points

3 Clues: 35 Victory Points

3 Clues + Girl: 50 Victory Points

+ any bonus points from Research Cards

Important: The only way to escape without the girl is by having 3 Clues.

During your investigation, you must survive two types of horror:
Physical Horrors that cause Damage (reducing your Health Points).

Mental Horrors that erode your sanity (reducing your Sanity Points).
If either your Health or Sanity reaches zero, your character meets a grim end: they either die or go insane, remaining trapped in the house... forever!
