Tempo consists of the board and 40 pieces, 28 of which represent the common soldiers and 12 the officers. The game is played by two opponents, each receiving 14 soldiers and, for any promotions, 6 officers. The two opponents place their 14 soldiers in the last three ranks, on the positions marked by circles.
The soldiers move along the prescribed paths to the right, left, and straight ahead. The same applies to the diagonal paths of the trenches.If a soldier manages to advance into the last enemy battle line, he is promoted to officer and differs from the soldiers in that he is allowed to move backward. However, he loses his rank and the right to move backward as soon as he has lost all his troops and comrades.
A soldier is captured when the opponent succeeds in blocking his path from all three sides. In this case, the captured soldier is removed from the board. Since retreat to the Masurian Lakes as well as to the neutral territories is impossible, the squares located on them are considered blocked from one side.
The capture of an officer, who can also move backwards, therefore occurs when he is also blocked from a fourth side. The capture of several soldiers or officers is done in the same way as that of a single one, namely by blocking from three or two sides, respectively.
The ultimate goal of the game is to capture all enemy soldiers or the enemy fortress. The latter is achieved when at least three entrances to the fortress are occupied.
If both opponents are left with two stones each, regardless of whether they are officers or soldiers, the game remains a draw unless a decision can be reached in 30 moves.
