In Sugartown each player tries to be the first to match a sequence of cards that describe a crime committed between two characters. At the beginning of play a "true story" is created by the dealer. The true story is a sequence of suspect, crime, victim and location cards. Four decks in front of each player correspond to the sequence.
Each player draws a card and may either play cards that will eventually create the true story or play action cards that allow them to thwart another player's progress. Players are matching cards in full view of their opponents and suspect/crime/victim/location cards must be played. As a result each character goes through various stories before arriving at the true story, or correct sequence of cards. Players must carefully time the placement of matches and be vigilant about watching the progress of other players.
Five action cards represent film noir inspired twists. An "Interrogation" card allows a player to steal a card from another player's deck. An "Amnesia" card allows a player to block an opponents progress on a deck. A "Flashback" card allows a player to lift the Amnesia card or reveal a matching card that was hidden from view. A "Brainwash" card wipes out a player's decks causing them to begin from scratch. However, a "Turn the Tables" card can reflect this or other actions back upon other players.
Game play can vary from 15 minutes to an hour or longer. The game can be learned in minutes and produces 100s of unique story lines using colorful character, crimes and locales based upon gangster and detective film tropes.
