Lovingly inspired by the heavenly stems & earthly branches of the Chinese zodiac: in Stem & Branch, you’ll race to build your tableau of zodiac animals, helping them to ascend through the two 60-year cycles, which the deck perfectly matches.

Summary

Summon animals to improve your tableau & ascend to collect elemental stems to master each element. This is done by drafting cards from a shared display and playing cards from your hand into your personal tableau. Card costs are relative to their levels and element type, with costs being paid by discarding matching element cards or animals of the same type. Costs are also supported by all of the animals in your personal tableau of the matching element types. There can be only one of each animal type in all players tableaus, so plan carefully to time your ascensions when playing older animals to remove your opponents younger ones.

The game takes place over two rounds which represent the moon and sun cycles. Once the draw deck runs out the 1st time, the moon cycle completes, triggering a short scoring event. Afterwards, all cards are shuffled for the 2nd round, or sun cycle. The game ends once the deck empties a 2nd time, which triggers final scoring.
