Splinter is an abstract strategy game for two players. The object of the game is to splinter your opponent’s king into a group that is smaller than your king’s group.

Splinter is played on a standard 19 x 19 go board. Play begins with 15 pieces per player (14 pawns and 1 king), arranged near the center of the board in a single connected group.

On your turn, you may move one of your own pieces (including your king or any of your pawns) one square in any direction (diagonally or orthogonally). The moved piece may land on an empty square or may push one or more pieces (which may include pawns or kings of either or both colors) along with it, as long as all of the pushed pieces remain on the board.

A splinter occurs when one or more pieces become disconnected from the original group so that there are empty squares between those pieces and the original group.

Following a splinter, any groups that do not contain a king are out of play and the pawns occupying those groups are considered lost and are removed from the board. If a splinter causes the kings to occupy two different groups, the game ends and the player whose king occupies the larger group wins the game. If the two groups are of equal size, the player who has lost fewer pawns wins the game. If both players have lost an equal number of pawns, the game ends in a tie.
