Smalte is an abstract strategy game for two players, played with six colored pencils and one d6 on a 6×6 grid. The name comes from smalte — colored glass used in mosaics. Each turn, a player rolls the die, and the result determines which color they must place. The player then chooses any empty cell on the board and colors it. There are no placement restrictions: the choice of where to lay the glass is entirely yours.

The game has two central tensions. The first is the cluster: if you color a cell orthogonally adjacent to a cell of the same color, your opponent immediately scores +1. This means every act of building has a price. The second is the square: if you complete a 2×2 block of four cells that are either all the same color or all four different colors, you win the game instantly. No scoring, no counting — the square decides everything.

Because the die generates the color but not the place, Smalte is a game of constrained choice. You cannot always play the color you want, but you can always decide where it goes, and whether it is worth paying the cluster price to build toward a square. Victory comes from masking threats, waiting for the right roll, and creating forks that the opponent cannot block in time.

The game ends when a player completes a winning square, or when the board is full. If no square has been assembled, players count the cluster points they have received during the game, and the higher score wins. Smalte is a game about how beauty does not require complexity: six pencils, one die, a scrap of paper, and a game that becomes a mosaic by the end.
