The outbreak of the Great War, often called „the seminal catastrophe of the 20th century”, is one of the most controversial topics in human history. Many Europeans had condoned war, but hardly anyone could have wanted the unprecedented slaughter that began in 1914. Within a few weeks in the summer of that fateful year, the most prosperous civilization ever seen on earth wrecked itself. Why did it happen? How could it happen?
Sleepwalkers is a simulation game for 1-5 players representing the governments of the major powers which clashed in August, 1914: Austria-Hungary, Britain, France, Germany and Russia. It covers roughly one and a half decades on from around 1900.

All governments, even the most autocratic ones, depend for their survival on a certain degree of popular support. Prestige is an essential political asset. No government can afford to „lose face“. The stronger it appears, the better. A martial stance, however, can easily lead to conflict with other governments and escalate into disastrous war. Keeping a balance between assertiveness on the one hand and conciliation on the other is the central challenge in „Sleepwalkers“. Can you avoid war, while striving for a peace that suits you?
