Shadow Market is a closed-economy auction game played with a standard 52-card deck where every resource is finite. In this ruthless environment, managing your hand size is just as vital as acquiring points, as running out of cards leaves you defenseless against your opponents.

The game is driven by a brutal "Winner Pays" mechanic. Players bid blindly on market cards; while losers return their bids to their hands, the winner must discard everything they wagered to the void . This creates a constant dilemma: winning a prestigious card now creates a permanent reduction in your purchasing power for the rest of the game.

Beyond the auctions, players must navigate a tight tactical economy. The game utilizes a "Market Correction" system to balance starting hands, preventing early runaways . On their turn, players can burn specific Agent cards to trigger suit-based powers—filtering the deck, recycling discards, or stealing from rivals—but doing so costs precious bidding capital . Every turn forces a choice between drawing income to survive or spending capital to score.

The game creates a high-stakes crescendo rather than a slow attrition. When the draw deck is empty, play triggers "The Last Stand," where all remaining market cards are auctioned in a single, massive bundle . The player who has banked the highest total value in their score pile at the end is the winner.
