In Runesword, 2–6 players take on the roles of legendary craftsmen competing to forge a magnificent sword capable of defeating a hidden Shadow Enemy.

During the Build Phase, players roll their unique sets of dice, keep one die, and contribute the remaining dice to a common pool. Players draft dice to collect resources such as Metal, Gems, Blessings, and Tools, as well as Arcana, a separate form of magical energy. Resources are used to purchase sword components, while Arcana is used to forge those components into the Runesword, increasing its Strength, Durability, Beauty, and Magic Resistance.

As players develop their Runeswords, they can discover information about the Shadow Enemy's hidden attributes through several different methods. Eventually, players may challenge the Shadow Enemy. To win, a player's Runesword must equal or exceed the Shadow Enemy in all four attributes and exceed it in at least one. The first player to successfully defeat the Shadow Enemy wins the game.
