Rugby and Roll puts you in charge of a rugby team for a full match, from the opening whistle to the final play. Every element of real rugby is here: tries and conversions, penalty kicks and drop goals, scrums, line-outs, mauls, turnovers at the ruck, yellow and red cards, sin-bin suspensions, and even a bench finisher waiting to come on when legs get heavy. The board is a rugby pitch divided into zones — push the opposing team back toward their try line, or watch them march toward yours.

The match is played over a series of plays, grouped into phases of eight. On each play, the attacker draw 4 action cards and secretly picks one — a Pick & Go, a Skip Pass, a Line Break, a kick, and many more— and commits one of their fifteen players to it, matching the player's strength, skill, speed or kicking bonus to the action. The defender responds with their own card and player: a simple tackle, a crunching Big Hit, or a Ruck Steal to try to rip the ball away. A die roll, modified by the players' bonuses, decides the outcome: ground gained, a turnover, a scrum for a knock-on, or a penalty. Managing your squad is the heart of the game — every player you commit tires your team, and at the end of each phase, fatigue cards are shuffled into your decks. Draw two fatigue cards in a row and you concede a penalty try. Collect too many penalties and your players start seeing yellow, then red.

You win by scoring more points than your opponent when the final whistle blows: five points for a try plus two for the conversion, three for a penalty kick or a drop goal. The standard match lasts 40 plays (a quick 20-play mode is also available), followed by extra time where the attacking side may choose to end the match after any play — hold on to your lead, or gamble everything on one last attack. Read the field, manage your players' energy, pick your moments to kick for territory or run it from deep: the team that balances risk and fatigue best will lift the trophy.
