Each player is being provided with four men of the same color. These are placed on the four circles within the balk corresponding in color to the men. All play must be from right to left round the board.
Red leads the throwing, the player on the left follows and so on round the board until a crown is thrown. The player who first throws a crown, starts playing by placing a man on the starting point. He may throw again. As soon as the other players throw a crown they may start in the same way.
Each time a crown is thrown the player is entitled to another throw. It is left to the player's own discretion, whether he moves the man already out, or if he starts out another figure.
The player moves as many spaces as thrown by the die. He must move at every throw, whether to his advantage or not, if he is not prevented.
When a crown is thrown the player moves his man on to the next space so marked, regardless of how many spaces, or of a feather, between. The player throwing a feather moves on to the next feather space, but if a crown is between, he loses the throw, for he cannot pass a crown with a feather throw
If a player throws into a space already occupied, he places his man on top of the opponent and so makes a "Double". If he makes a double the opponent must now move this double every time he throws (that is if he can move this man at all). He is compelled to move the double in preference to all his other men. The double may move off alone again when he pleases. A double cannot play into a space already occupied. If a player, carrying a double, throws two crowns in succession he may send the double back to his balk, or place himself on top of the double, thus reversing the situation. But the double must go to balk if his carrier has no other man to move.
If a double is carried past his own home color, he must play round the board again. If a double is carried into another home color he has to remain there, till he has got all his other men home first. He then plays the double down the colored spaces till he can move round the board in the ordinary way.
A space can at the same time be occupied by only 2 men. If a man carrying a double comes to a space occupied by an opponent he sends him to balk. The player cannot play into a space already occupied by one of his own men, or occupied by a double. In all such cases, if he has no other man to move, he loses the turn.
As soon as a player has got his man into the home color, he is out of danger and finally reaches home by throwing a crown.
Whoever gets his four men first on the home crown wins the game.
