This is a simple, fast-play, and free!, Ben-Hur-style chariot race game.
The board included with these rules can be printed on 5 sheets of standard paper and assembled.
The included board, with a sheet of tables placed at one end, will fit in an 11 x 35 frame.
The board from the 1980 Avalon Hill game Circus Maximus can also be used. Digital versions of that board are available for free online that can be printed by a copy shop onto a single sheet of much larger sizes.
The larger boards can be used with miniatures or counters.
Paper counters are included with these rules that can be mounted.
The Finish Line:
The finish line is the end of the straightaway opposite the starting straightaway. The race is three laps long,
but without the last curve of the third lap. (Note: This is where the finish line was historically, with the
Emperor or most distinguished spectators sitting in a temple-like structure located at the finish line.)
Turn Sequence:
At the beginning of each turn the tokens representing the chariots are returned to the cup and each player
chooses the number of movement dice (d8’s) they will roll for their chariot during the current turn. The
maximum number of d8’s is either 5 or the number of Endurance points the chariot has remaining, whichever is less.
Players should consult the Movement Dice table for assistance in choosing their number of movement dice.
(Note: About 2/3 of the movement die roll outcomes will be within the “Most Likely” range of the Movement Dice table for the number of d8’s chosen. That means that around 1/6 will be above this range and 1/6 will be below.)
A token is drawn from the cup and the corresponding chariot is moved. The token is not put back into the cup until the beginning of the next turn. After the first Chariot has made its move and all attacks or other outcomes have been resolved, a second token is drawn for the next chariot. This is repeated until all the tokens have been drawn and each chariot has made its move and resolved its outcomes.
