Inspired by the political realism of Machiavelli and the turbulent world of medieval and Renaissance church politics, Pontiff is a strategic game of influence, legitimacy, and calculated risk.

Players take the role of Renaissance Patrons seeking to dominate princely courts and ultimately control the Papal Conclave. Cards are placed face-down on Seats of Influence across eight Princely Courts, each seat defined by position, rank, and vocation. Placement is never neutral: the closer a card matches its seat, the stronger its influence when challenged during elections and revealed. Fortuna cards introduce instability — wars, famine, assassination, and witch hunts — disrupting carefully laid plans. No player is eliminated; power shifts until the Papacy is secured.

Court elections are triggered as hierarchies fill. Players challenge rivals, expose mismatches, and watch influence rise, collapse, or even change hands. Victors elect Princes, unlock Cardinal seats, and manoeuvre for position in the final Papal Election.

Bluffing in Pontiff lies not in hidden roles, but in strategic commitment: how boldly will you claim a seat knowing it may later be tested?

Through layered elections, hidden information, and shifting control of Influence dice, Pontiff creates a disciplined yet tense struggle for power in which legitimacy must be earned — or convincingly staged.
