Papa Tango gaming rules were designed to give players a feel for the PT actions that oc­curred in the "Slot" around Guadalcanal during World War II.

No attempt was made at a naval simulation but instead the main design goal was that of a fast playing, fun, "Beer and Pretzel" type of game. A game that would give you an excuse to collect and paint up some PTs and Japanese naval craft.

A couple of different design techniques were use. As PT pat­rols and actions almost always happened at night, part of the game would involve just trying to locate the enemy. This could best be accomplished having all of the players on one side and having the Japanese side run by a game master. The other unique design technique was the use of darts as the hit mecha­nism for firing. I had watched a naval game at one of the first Little Wars conventions that use darts thrown at a silhouette tar­gets and it was obvious that the players were having a good time tossing the darts. It just seemed that the game might be fun in­corporating another popular game into the wargame.
Game players are members of the "Lucky Seven" PT squadron, a fictitious squadron operating in the "Slot" during the Guadacanal and New Georgia campaigns during World War IL The squadron consists of 3-6 players operating with six PT boats. There are two replacement boats for boats lost in combat.

Each game consists of 10 patrols with each patrol lasting up to 20 turns. The squadron has been assigned the mission of protecting the Guadacanal airfield from attack by the Japanese navy and to interdict supplies and rein­forcements from reaching Japanese held islands. So check your ammunition and fuel, man your craft and get ready to tango with the "Tokyo Express".
