Murder of a Christmas Elf is a festive murder mystery investigation set at the North Pole. Just days before Christmas, the final of the Best Christmas House Elf competition is about to begin when an elf is murdered. The players become the detectives and must discover what happened and identify the killer from a cast of suspects that includes the competition finalists and familiar North Pole characters.

Players investigate the case by examining a collection of evidence, documents, photographs, witness information and other clues. As new evidence is uncovered, players compare information, identify inconsistencies, follow possible leads and develop their own theories about the suspects' motives, means and opportunities. The mystery can be investigated solo or collaboratively as a group.

The case can be played in a single session or with the numbered evidence revealed gradually. In the Advent format, one new clue is opened each day leading up to Christmas; alternatively, the investigation can be spread across the 12 Days of Christmas by revealing two clues each day.

To solve the game, players must use the evidence they have gathered to determine who murdered the Christmas elf and explain the mystery correctly. Red herrings and competing theories may lead the investigation in different directions, but the evidence contains the information needed to uncover the solution.
