Märchenspuk begins in the castle vaults and ends in the castle tower. Each player aims to be the first to reach the castle tower with their witch and their ghost.
The cards for the ghost and witch figures are shuffled separately and placed face-down on the designated spaces on the game board. The figures are placed side-by-side in front of the game board. The player with the highest score chooses their starting position first and begins the game; the others follow in descending order of their scores.
Both dice are rolled simultaneously. The number rolled on one die applies to the ghost, while the number on the other applies to the witch. For each point rolled, a figure may move one space either forward or sideways. Each figure is allowed one change of direction per move, but no move may be made toward the exit (backward). If a move ends exactly on a space occupied by an opponent's figure (of any type), that figure is sent back to any starting space.
If a player lands on a red space, they must draw a card from the corresponding deck (for either the witch or the ghost) and then place it back at the bottom of the deck. These "surprise" cards may move a player forward or backward; they cannot be combined with a change of direction. If a player lands on a black space, their figure has fallen into the castle moat; it must be returned to any starting space, and the player must begin again from there.
Each player must attempt to bring both of their figures to the finish line within a single sequence of rolls and along a continuous path. It does not matter if there are any leftover movement points.
