In a quiet realm between worlds, the greatest minds in psychology have created the Empathy Machine, a device that turns human experiences, events, and psychological knowledge into stories and riddles. In Look Inside, players use this machine to enter the lives and inner worlds of people facing different mental health challenges. Together, they observe what happens to them, discuss what they might experience, and make decisions from their perspective.

Each scenario follows a different protagonist with their own story and struggles and can be explored from different perspectives. In Anna’s scenario, for example, players may experience her story through her work life in one playthrough and through her family life in another, encountering different interactions and dreams along the way. Once explored, content from different perspectives can also be combined to create new variations of the scenario.

During Interactions, the protagonist encounters other people who may respond supportively or say something difficult. Players are given several possible reactions, but instead of choosing the “best” response or what they themselves would do, they must determine how the protagonist is able to react in that moment. To do so, they look inside the character’s inner world, where the current state of their challenges and overall well-being provides clues. Players interpret these clues together and agree on an answer before checking the result. During Dreams, players enter the protagonist’s dreams and try to send helpful hints by identifying elements hidden in dream illustrations. These elements represent techniques drawn from psychology, and players must again consider the protagonist’s current state to determine which approach might fit.

Each scenario unfolds over three chapters. By solving Interaction and Dream riddles, players can improve the protagonist’s well-being and change the state of their challenges. The players win together if all challenges reach their green state before the end of the third chapter.
