One player loads the game board and knows the solution while the others guess simultaneously. The object is to guess the secret five-letter word using as few clues as possible. The first clue tells the players the first letter of the target word and some letters which are not in the word. Each player writes their guesses secretly and simultaneously. Four more clues will be given, one at a time, showing which letters belong in the target word. Some of those letters will be indicated to be in the wrong position. Guessing the target word correctly using fewer clues will score the more points than guessing using more clues.

One out of every three game boards is a Speed Round. All players have thirty seconds to unscramble five five-letter words on their individual score sheets.

The player with the most points after five rounds is declared the winner.

Lingo is very loosely based on an American television game show.
