In Kasai Bakra, most players are Bakra (goats), while a smaller group of Kasai (butchers in disguise) hide among them. A Narrator guides the game through alternating night and day phases. The Bakra must identify and eliminate all of the hidden Kasai, while the Kasai attempt to survive long enough to equal or outnumber the remaining Bakra.

During the night, the Kasai secretly choose a player to eliminate, while characters with special roles may investigate, heal, protect, eliminate, or otherwise affect other players. During the day, everyone debates what happened, searches for inconsistencies, bluffs, makes accusations, and ultimately votes to eliminate a suspected player. Eliminated players do not normally reveal their roles, keeping identities uncertain and allowing suspicion to build throughout the game.

Masala cards add an unpredictable twist to every round. Drawn during play, they can temporarily rewrite the rules, grant or disrupt player abilities, restrict how the group communicates, protect a potential target, bring an eliminated player back into the action, or create an unexpected challenge the table has to deal with immediately. A round that appears to be going perfectly for one side can suddenly change direction, forcing both the Bakra and Kasai to adapt their plans instead of relying on the same strategy from game to game.

The Narrator can also use Mystic Cue cards, optional storytelling prompts that provide humorous ways to describe the fate of eliminated players and help keep the story moving between rounds. Together with a wide range of character roles and alternate game modes, the Masala and Mystic Cue cards give the Narrator tools to keep games fast-moving, unpredictable, and different each time they are played.
