By this point, Mars had become less of a shining beacon of human achievement and more of a very large, very dusty reminder that humans will eventually turn absolutely anywhere into a place full of broken junk.

The endless junkyards of the Haulscape stretch for miles across the planet. Mountains of rusted tools, cracked batteries, bent signs, snapped wires, mystery engines (many of which are technically still running), and chairs missing exactly one leg. Entire communities survive by digging through the remains of everyone else’s failed ambitions.

Professional scavengers, part-time traders, self-taught mechanics, and full-time opportunists. They are the sort of people who consider ownership a flexible concept and smoke coming from machinery more of a suggestion than a warning. Every Junkie dreams of finding a haul valuable enough to buy their way into the Hive Cities, where food allegedly grows out of the ground and portraits of the Tsar become noticeably larger the wealthier the district gets.

Not all junk is equal.

Some pieces of junk have special Stickers slapped onto them. Modifications that give the item unusual effects whenever it is bought, traded, or gifted. Nobody really knows who invented Stickers, though historians agree it was probably someone trying to avoid reading instructions.

Then there’s the illegal junk.

Certain items are classified as Doomed by the Redhands, the exhausted and underpaid regulators responsible for maintaining order across the wastes. Together with the Scholars, they outlaw any junk believed to resemble long-lost Earth artifacts, despite nobody remembering what Earth actually looked like anymore. Naturally, this also makes Doomed junk the most valuable kind you can find.

Because if there’s one thing humanity has always agreed on, it’s that danger becomes far more appealing the moment someone tells you not to touch it.

Junkies is a light deckbuilding card game built around a simple and satisfying top-decking mechanic. Players buy, trade, gift, and play unique Junk Cards to build the most valuable haul they can.

But surviving the Haulscape isn’t just about wealth.

To enter Hive Society, players must possess a Trophy, rare objects of extraordinary status and importance whose original purpose has long since been forgotten, which only increased their value considerably.

Players take turns playing cards from the top of their decks into their lanes until no space remains. Once every lane is full, all cards are revealed and their values are totalled. The player with the highest-value haul becomes Junkie of the Day and earns a Trophy.

Of course, greed has consequences.

Collect too much Doomed junk and the Redhands will come stomping through your haul, confiscating every illegal item in play while loudly insisting this is all being done “for public safety,” which on Mars usually means someone richer complained.

To win the game, you must finish the round with

• both the highest haul value,
• and at least one Trophy in play.

Where ownership is determined almost entirely by who grabbed the junk first and whether they survived holding it.
