Objective
Advance your letters across a hexagonal battlefield, capture opposing letters and form a word in your opponent’s home row. The first player to move at least three letters to the opposite home row and arrange them to spell a valid word wins the game.
Lasercut Components
• 1 hexagonal game board tray
• 2 sets of 25 A-Z letter tiles, each numbered 1-6 (to match die rolls)
• 1 six-sided die.
Setup
1. Place the game board between two players facing each other.
2. Each player takes one complete set of 25 letter tiles.
3. Each player places their tiles in the first three rows on their end, strategically stacking them.
4. You cannot stack letters in your Home Row.
5. Choose the starting player.
How to Play
Players alternate turns. On your turn:
1. Roll the die.
2. Pick one of your letters bearing the number rolled.
3. Move that letter to an adjacent “weaker” space, except backwards.
4. If you have letters in the opponent’s Home Row, check whether you have completed a winning word.
Your turn then ends.
Space Strength
An empty space has a strength of 0. A single tile on a space has a strength of 1. Stacked letters have greater strength.
Moving Letters
Move a letter that matches your die roll to a weaker, adjacent space.
A letter cannot move backwards, only forward or sideways.
A letter may move onto a space occupied by another of your own letters. This is called stacking.
Stacking Letters to Build Strength.
You may stack a maximum of three of your tiles giving stacks a strength of 2 or 3. However, in either Home Row, no more than three stacked letters are permitted.
Stacks do not move - only the top letter of a stack can move.
Capturing Letters
You may capture an opposing space if your stack/space has a greater strength. Remove the top tile of the opponent’s space and replace it with the top tile of your stack. The removed tile is now out of play. Such a mixed stack can only be recaptured by a stronger opponent.
Reaching the Opposite Home Row
When one of your letters reaches your opponent’s Home Row, it has crossed the battlefield.
A letter that reaches the opposite Home Row:
• may only move sideways on later turns, and
• may still capture an opposing letter occupying an adjacent space in that row.
Use sideways movement to rearrange your letters and build your winning word.
Winning the Game
You win immediately when at least three of your letters on your opponent’s Home Row form a valid word in consecutive spaces. Call out your word. A word must:
• contain at least three letters,
• read left to right or right to left,
• use consecutive letters with no empty spaces between them, and
• appear in an agreed-upon dictionary.
Note that if your opponent captures all of your vowels along with the letter “Y”, you lose.
No Matching Letter
When your roll results in have no matching letter available to move, your turn ends.
Extended HomeWords
Requires a winning word of at least four letters for a longer and more challenging game.
Strategies
Vowels are your most valuable letters due to their scarcity. They must be protected. Try to keep them safe and away from being captured. Otherwise, you will need to use only consonants with words like TRY, GYM or SPY etc. With the four-letter word option, you will only have words like HYMN, LYNX and CYST available.
Stacking is a good way to protect letters.
Advance with several stacked letters to give you future options for building different words.
Capture a stack and then move beyond it on a subsequent turn.
Quick Turn Summary
Roll → Move a matching letter one space → Capture if applicable → Check for a winning word.
