From May 11-13, two German armored divisions acting as part of the German "Cape" from Fall Gelb plunged into Belgium between Maastricht and Liege, meeting the French Cavalry Corps consisting of two French Divisions Leger Mechanique (DLMs), among the best armored formations in the French Army of 1940. The French under General Prioux established a series of hedgehogs in various villages along the anticipated German line of advance on a south-easterly 20km line from Huy on the Meuse in the south to the very edge of the British line near Tirlemont in the north. During two days of intense combat, the French gave as good as they got, succeeding in their mission of delaying the German army from reaching the "Gembloux Gap" where the very powerful French 1st Army was still assembling. In the end, the French retreated in good order on the 13th of May toward the 1st Army, satisfied that their delaying action had been a success. The Germans were left with the rude awakening that their tanks were often no match against the French.

Hannut is the first in a series of 8 titles in the Campaign in France 1940 (CiF40) game system, which covers division-level combat at the platoon level during the German invasion of the Low Countries, Belgium and France in 1940, focusing on tank battles during the campaign. Its larger purpose is to help history buffs and wargamers better appreciate the capabilities of the combatants, and thus the reasons for the eventual outcome of the conflict. Scale is 250 meters/hex, combat units are platoons and batteries, Turns are 1 hour in length, divided into 15 minute impulses.

Loosely adapted from games like Panzer Leader, Panzer Command, and the Grand Tactical System/Company Scale System, the CiF40 system attempts to merge the playability and grand tactical feel of classic platoon level games with more realistic Command and Control functions to facilitate the coordination of large corps and division-sized formations. This is a not a super-detailed design, however. Much effort has been made to streamline processes so that players can focus on the battle, not bookkeeping.
