Three games within a wooden folding game box, all using a spinner rather than a die.
John Gilpin is based on English poet William Cowper's 1782 comic ballad "The Diverting History of John Gilpin". The poem tells how Gilpin and his wife and children became separated during a journey to the Bell Inn, Edmonton, after Gilpin loses control of his horse which bolts and carries him ten miles further to the town of Ware. The board for John Gilpin consists of a track in the shape of a spoked wheel. Any number of players can play. Each starts his piece on any space on the wheel rim with a horsehead. Using a spinner instead of a die, players each move their pieces clockwise around the rim. If they land exactly on the end of a spoke they may thereafter move inward along the spoke hoping to end exactly on the Inn at the centre of the wheel. If they overleap the inn, the continue outward on the opposite spoke, and clockwise around the wheel once more. First player to end exactly on the Inn wins.
Rainbow Backgammon is a luck-based piece-capturing game for 2-4 players, played on a 36-space circular track of rainbow-hued backgammon-like triangles. Every third triangle (12 in total) points to an individual circle in the centre of the board. Scoring token are placed on these 12 circles. Players start with two pieces each, one space apart, on their own side of the track. Each player spins the spinner and moves one of his pieces anticlockwise the number of spaces spun. If he lands on a space pointing to a scoring token, he collects the token. If he lands on an opponent's piece, the piece is bumped backwards to the space before the leftmost corner of the board. The winner is the player who collects the most scoring tokens.
Bewildered Travellers is a luck-based game for 2-4 players, each trying to find his way home at night from a dinner party at a country house, across a fog-bound moor. Played on a board of 17 x 9 spaces, each player starts his piece in once corner of the board an attempts to land exactly on the space in the opposite corner. On odd-numbered rounds, each player moves a number of spaces, orthogonally or diagonally, spun on the spinner. In even numbered rounds, each player moves a number of spaces equal to either of the numbers on the edges of the board, according to his current rank and file. Players can either attempt to get home on odd numbered rounds using the spinner, or on even numbered rounds by being on one of the two spaces whose rank or file numbers would get him directly home. Only one piece can occupy a space: a player forced to land on another piece loses his turn. A player leaping over another piece send the latter back to its starting square.
