F41 Fray Bentos: 72 Hours in the Crater is a solo card-and-dice survival game in which you command the crew of a stranded British Mark IV tank during one of the most extraordinary defensive actions of the First World War. The tank is trapped deep in enemy territory, surrounded by artillery, snipers and assault troops. Your objective is not to win a battle, but simply to survive long enough to escape.
How the Game Plays
Each game lasts 12 rounds, representing the seventy-two hour siege.
During every round:
German threats are drawn from a standard deck of cards.
The player rolls Action Dice equal to the surviving crew.
Dice are assigned to fight threats, repair the tank, reduce stress or recover pinned crew.
Any unresolved threats attack the tank and crew.
The round marker advances.
As the siege continues:
Artillery shells damage the tank.
Infantry assaults kill crewmen.
Snipers pin crew members.
Stress gradually pushes the crew towards collapse.
Water shortages make conditions increasingly desperate.
Every casualty permanently reduces the number of dice you roll, meaning the game becomes harder the longer you survive.
The Core Challenge
The heart of the game is resource management.
You must balance:
Hull Integrity
Crew Stress
6-Pdr ammunition
Lewis Gun ammunition
Surviving crew strength
Ammunition can destroy threats immediately, but ammunition is limited. Once it runs out, you must rely on repairs, stress reduction and clever use of rerolls to stay alive.
Every die assignment feels important because one poor decision may lead to casualties several rounds later.
How You Lose
There are two immediate defeat conditions:
Tank Destroyed
If Hull Integrity reaches 0, the tank is destroyed and the game ends immediately.
Crew Collapse
If Crew Stress reaches 10, the crew can no longer function and the game ends immediately.
Most defeats occur because players run out of ammunition and cannot keep artillery and infantry attacks under control.
How You Win
To win, you must survive all 12 rounds and complete the breakout after Round 12.
Survival alone is not enough.
At the end of the game you calculate a final score using:
Remaining Hull
Remaining ammunition
Surviving crew
Remaining Stress
Strategic Escape Hazard modifiers
This creates several levels of success ranging from complete disaster to legendary achievement.
Why the Game Feels Different
Unlike many war games, the objective is not to destroy the enemy.
The player experiences:
isolation
dwindling resources
constant pressure
mounting casualties
difficult risk-reward decisions
Early in the game the crew feels powerful.
Later, the ammunition bins are empty, friends are dead, and every round becomes a desperate struggle simply to hold out until darkness falls.
The game often creates memorable stories because the named crewmen survive or die individually. Players become attached to particular crew members and begin making decisions around keeping them alive rather than maximising points.
Typical Player Experience
A typical game goes through four stages:
Hope
The crew starts with full ammunition and a strong tank.
Attrition
Resources steadily disappear while threats increase.
Crisis
Ammunition runs low and casualties begin to mount.
Breakout
The surviving crew abandons the tank and attempts to escape with whatever remains.
The result is a solo game that feels less like commanding a tank and more like leading a handful of exhausted men through one of the most desperate survival situations of the Great War
