In Dreaded Flags, players can refight historical naval conflicts between small fleets in the Age of Piracy. Players take command of one or more ships in engagements between privateers, pirates and/or pirate hunters.
The game balances historical accuracy with straightforward and intuitive game play: The various types of fire used in the game reflect the risky and perilous nature of the combat. Other era-specific factors are also taken into account: you will discover first-hand the effect of a good captain and a motivated crew.
Still, scenarios can be played in one sitting, with playtime ranging from 30 minutes up to about 2 hours.
Scenarios can be played with two players - or more, if each player takes command of one ship. Two dedicated solitaire scenarios and one dedicated 3-player scenario are included. Apart from the published scenarios, players are encouraged to design their own engagements.
The game is available as a book. The publication contains the rules, all the charts, 8 scenarios, maps and ship’s log pages. You will also find several ship counters, other useful counters and a wind vane.
Additionally, you only need 5 regular, 6-sided dice and a pen per player.
New and blank ship’s log pages and maps can be found in the Files section here on boardgamegeek.
If you like to play with miniatures all the maps and blank bases are also available for free a 1:900 scale. Simply print the map to fit your scale, mount miniatures to the blank bases, and you're good to go.
At the moment, these battles are included:
The Ambush: John Hawkins vs. the City of San Juan de Ulúa - 1568
The Sacking: Henry Morgan vs the city of Maracaibo - 1669 (Solitaire)
The Heist: Henry Every vs. the Murghal Fleet - 1695
The Salvaging: Charles Vane and Henry Jennings vs. The Spanish Salvage Fleet - 1715(3 Players)

The Reckoning: Blackbeard vs. Stede Bonnet - 1718
The Commission: Black Bart vs. the people of Barbados - 1720 (Solitaire)

These give you a ton of replayability. But for those who purchased the book, more scenarios will be published here in the future.
Now, hoist the dreaded flag and ready the guns!
