"Deny or Punish," designed by Akar Bharadvaj, is a quick-playing, two-player lane battler game that abstractly models Cold War escalation and deterrence in only 26 cards.

Open war between the United States and Soviet Union would be an existential horror, and deterrence is less costly than fighting. Can the two countries achieve their objectives while managing their tensions and distrust? Will trying to do so bankrupt the countries? Or will it end the world in fire?

Players try to meet secret objectives that allow them to draw more cards (which abstractly represent military forces) at the end of their turn. They fulfill these objectives by trying to dominate post-War Europe and Asia, which they will do by deploying Force cards (placing them in a region), committing Force cards to a conflict (if one breaks out), and trying to convince their opponent to withdraw from the region. Each phase of the game (Competition, Crisis, Conflict, or Nuclear Crisis) has a progressively more complex, but overlapping, path to domination.

Deploying and committing forces is expensive and requires spending victory points; each card in a player's hand is worth two victory points, and each card deployed to a region is worth one. Players will try to achieve objectives as inexpensively as possible, while increasing the cost that their opponent will need to achieve their secret objectives.

A player with 12 points wins the game. The game may also end if the opponent concedes or if nuclear war breaks out. Both players can win, but also both players can lose.
