In De Veiling van Hashiban, players are goblin merchants competing in a secret auction house beneath the city of Hashiban. Each player begins with three hidden merchants, each interested in specific categories of fantastical objects – books, plants, weapons, curiosities and more. Over the course of the game, players acquire objects at auction in the hope of matching these secret demands while keeping their true interests hidden from the table.

On a turn, the active player first gains income, then chooses one of several actions. They can reveal a new object from the deck and hold an open auction, or they can offer a lot of cards from their hand and set the starting price themselves. In both cases, players openly bid with banknote cards, raising or passing until only one bidder remains. Players may negotiate, make side deals, or even combine their money to push up the price, as long as everyone involved agrees to the terms. Special actions include a lottery-style “Bonoloto” that allows players to exchange small bills for a chance at bigger ones and powerful weapons that can temporarily knock rivals out of an ongoing auction.

Whenever a player collects a set of objects that matches one of their hidden merchants, they may reveal that merchant by discarding the matching cards. Revealed merchants, as well as special share certificates tied to the public merchant on the table, provide ongoing income whenever certain categories of objects come up for sale. The first player to reveal all three of their merchants wins the game, having outbid, outbluffed and outmanoeuvred the other goblin traders at the Hashiban auction.
