Each player places their pieces in the other player's territory. The five councilors stand in the first line, the ten aldermen behind them. The players take turns moving. Each player takes three steps along the lines of the game board, i.e., from point to point.

Aldermen may move in any direction, except away from the river toward the interior, although they may move sideways.

The councilors, on the other hand, are allowed to move in any direction, including backwards. The councilors also have the right to capture opposing councilors and aldermen. Capture is achieved by removing an opposing piece that is on the third point of the move and placing one's own piece in its place. If all councilors on one side are captured, the right to capture passes to the aldermen, but they may only capture forwards and sideways.

The three moves may also be distributed among two or three pieces. Those who cross the bridge try to occupy the white points on the courtyard wall in their home territory. The first player to occupy all seven points wins the game. Pieces that land on a white point may not move from it during the game.
